Types of Conveyor Systems

Conveyor systems are mechanical devices that are used to move materials or packages with minimal effort. Conveyor systems usually consist of frames that support rollers, wheels or belts. The conveyor systems are usually motor powered devices though they may sometimes be manual devices as well.

Conveyor systems are of various types depending on the material they are made of and the mechanism that is used to move the packages and materials. The various types of conveyor systems that find use in various industries include:
  • Slat or apron conveyors: These conveyor systems are the ones that make use of steel, wood or other materials that can be mounted on roller chains to move products and packages. These conveyors are typically used for moving very heavy objects like crates, drums or pallets in heavy industries like the steel industry. These conveyors are considered to be very reliable and durable as these do not wear and tear easily.
  • Ball transfer conveyors: Ball transfer conveyors are the ones that make use of mounted ball casters to move products in several directions. These conveyors are not powered and rely on outside forces for their functioning. These find use in assembling and packaging industries.
  • Belt conveyors: The belt conveyor systems are the most common types of conveyors systems that are seen around. These systems are made of continuous belts to move products and packages either horizontally or across an inclined surface. Conveyor belts are most commonly used in material handling applications like baggage handling, food service, packaging, scrap handling etc.
  • Beltless magnetic conveyors: These conveyor systems are the ones that make use of magnets beneath stationary plates or tables etc. to move ferrous or magnetic materials. These find use in several industries like the steel industry and the scrap industry.
  • Bucket conveyors: Bucket conveyors are the material handling systems that make use of multi-sided containers attached to cables or chains to move materials. These types of conveyors are used in bulk material handling and are suitable for moving light-weight materials or products. These conveyors can be used horizontally or even in an inclined position to move materials.
  • Chute conveyor systems: Chute conveyors are the material handling systems that make use of gravity to move materials along smooth surfaces from one level to another. These types of conveyors find application in packaging industry.
  • Drag conveyors: The drag conveyors are also known as chain or tow conveyors that use mechanical devices attached to moving chains or cables to drag or tow materials. These conveyors are used to move heavy products or bulk materials and can have several discharge and loading points.
