Conveyor Belts- Their Functions

Conveyor belts are mechanical equipment that consists of two or more pulleys with continuous moving belts. These conveyor belts are used for a variety of purposes and the most common use is to move objects from one place to another. The use of conveyor belts in belting systems has made it possible to transport heavy goods over long distances in a short span of time.

Conveyor belts are broadly classified into two categories- fabric belting and steel cord belting. The fabric belting has an inner layer that provides tensile and strength of the belt. This belt is made of steel, plastic or meshes and is used in several conveyor systems. The steel cord belting is made of steel cables embedded into the belt and is separated with the help of a rubber. The steel cord belts are used in several businesses and find application in several industries.

There are various types of conveyor belts that can be used in different industries for several purposes. Most types of conveyor belts find application in material transport applications like food processing, manufacturing and other heavy industries.
The following are the functions of conveyor belts:
  • In manufacturing industries, conveyor belts are used to move products from one point to another or through a chain of assembly. These belts are designed for light and heavy duty applications in the manufacturing industries.
  • Conveyor belts are used in several industries for conveying products. These belts convey products either in straight direction or in directional changes through elevations. The function of these belts is to control the product movement in the sense that the products are neither damaged nor these get spoiled during the transport. These belts are used in different sizes for conveying products and also move at different speeds to convey products as per the needs of the industry.
  • Conveyor belts also function to move products and materials into processing units and then back again. The use of the conveyor belts improves productivity. This is because conveyor belts take less time to transport materials into the processing unit and also ensure that these do not get damaged and spoiled when entering the processing unit. This further ensures that the processing unit does not receive any damaged raw materials resulting in better quality end products.
  • Conveyor belts also find several other uses. These are used in treadmills. The conveyor belts are also the basic functioning units in grocery stores, escalators as well as baggage movement at airports.
